Empowering established grassroots orphan care centers by distributing material necessities and facilitating targeted program support that complements their existing services.
There are currently over 1 million orphans under the age of 17 in Malawi, and communities are self-organizing to deal with the crisis. Goods for Good’s research indicates that Community Based Organizations (CBOs) typically provide the most comprehensive and culturally appropriate services for the majority of orphaned children. However, these organizations are often severely under-resourced and over-extended. In response to these findings, G4G is partnering with over 150 CBOs to complement their educational and emotional support programs with much-needed material support.
The material support provided by G4G has included new sets of clothing for 27,000 children, fabric for over 22,000 uniforms, as well as school materials and other health and hygiene products. As a result of this program, thousands of children have improved self-esteem, are less stigmatized by their peers, are attending school regularly and are less vulnerable to extreme temperatures and disease. Additionally, the fabric provided supports vocational training programs in tailoring, which has trained hundreds of orphans that have dropped out of school.
